Brainbox Tool Calling
Most of Brainbox answers questions and works with text. Tool calling goes a step further: instead of just telling you how to change a setting, the Wavebox Assistant can make the change for you. Ask it to switch to dark mode, apply a theme, add an app, or set up a new space, and it does the work inside Wavebox.
This article explains what tool calling can do and how to use it.
What you need
Tool calling runs on the Wavebox Assistant engine. The other engines (GPT-5 Mini, and any Claude or GPT models you've added with your own API key) are great for writing and reasoning, but they can't take actions in Wavebox. If you ask one of them to change a setting, it will point you to the Wavebox Assistant.
You'll also need Brainbox enabled, which it is by default on a Wavebox Pro trial or subscription (Settings → General → Brainbox).
How to use it
- Open Brainbox by clicking the robot icon in the toolbar (top-right).
- In the prompt box, open the engine dropdown and choose Wavebox Assistant.
- Type what you want in plain language — for example, "Make Wavebox dark mode" — and hit return.
- The Assistant carries out the action and tells you what it did. Some changes (like switching light/dark mode) need a browser restart to take full effect — the Assistant will say so.
What you can ask it to do
The Assistant can take real actions across Wavebox. A few of the things it can do:
Appearance and themes — switch between light and dark mode, apply one of the built-in themes, generate a custom theme from a colour you name, or reset back to the default Wavebox theme.
Apps — search the Wavebox app store and add an app for you, or add a custom web app from any URL.
Spaces and groups — create a new space, clone a group, or change a group's name, colour, icon, sidebar and tab settings.
App settings — adjust an app's sleep and wake behaviour, badges, notifications, auto-reload, and pinned items.
Search and updates — set your default search engine, or change your auto-update settings (macOS and Windows).
Browser preferences — read and change Chrome preferences such as Safe Browsing and translation options.
It can also just answer questions about your own setup — "how many spaces do I have?", "which group is my Gmail app in?" — by looking through your Wavebox configuration.
Examples to try
- "Make Wavebox dark mode."
- "Apply a theme based on the colour #6C4BF4."
- "Add Trello to Wavebox."
- "Create a new space called Clients."
- "Set my default search engine to DuckDuckGo."
- "List all my spaces and the apps in each one."
Good to know
- Some changes need a restart. Switching the system colour scheme (light/dark mode), for example, only takes full effect after you restart Wavebox.
- Use the right engine for the job. Stay on the Wavebox Assistant for anything that changes Wavebox. Switch to GPT-5 Mini or your own model for writing, summarising, and general questions.
- It works on your own Wavebox. Tool calling acts on your spaces, apps, and settings — the same things you'd change by hand in Settings.
Troubleshooting
The Assistant says it can't change a setting. Check the engine dropdown — tool calling only works on Wavebox Assistant. If you're on another engine, switch over and ask again.
The change didn't appear. Some settings, including light/dark mode, need a browser restart. Restart Wavebox and check again.
I don't see the Wavebox Assistant option. Make sure Brainbox is enabled (Settings → General → Brainbox) and that you're on a Wavebox Pro trial or subscription. If it's still missing, contact Support.
Brainbox is missing entirely. Confirm you're on a Pro trial or active subscription, then check Settings → General → Brainbox is toggled on.
