Tab Boosting

Boosting transforms a regular browser tab into a permanent app in Wavebox. This gives you quick access to your favorite sites with enhanced features like persistent logins, notifications, unread badges, and a dedicated icon.

When to Boost a Tab

Boosting is ideal for:

  • βœ… Sites you visit daily or weekly
  • βœ… Services where you need to stay logged in
  • βœ… Tools where notifications matter
  • βœ… Custom websites not available in the App Store (e.g., company intranets, client portals)

⚠️ Important: For popular services like Slack, Gmail, Teams, Asana, etc., we recommend adding them from the Wavebox App Store instead of boosting. App Store apps include enhanced notification and badge support that custom weblink apps don't have.

How to Boost a Tab: Step-by-Step

Method 1: Right-Click the Tab

  1. Navigate to the website you want to boost
  2. Right-click on the tab in the tabstrip
  3. Select "Boost into App" from the menu
  4. In the pop-up:
    • If a matched App Store app is found: Click on it to use the store version (recommended for popular services)
    • If no match or it's a custom site: Click "Create Custom Weblink App"
  5. Edit the app details:
    • Change the app name (optional)
    • Select a different Group from the dropdown (optional)
    • Choose a different Space from the dropdown (optional)
  6. Click the [Boost] button
  7. βœ… Done! The app icon appears in your tabstrip

Method 2: Right-Click the Page

  1. Navigate to the website you want to boost
  2. Right-click anywhere on the page itself
  3. Select "Boost into App" from the context menu
  4. Follow steps 4-7 above

Choosing the Right App Type

When you boost a tab, Wavebox will check if there's a matching app in the App Store:

ScenarioWhat to Do
Match found (e.g., Slack, Gmail)βœ… Select the App Store version for full notification/badge support
No match (e.g., company intranet)βœ… Click "Create Custom Weblink App"
Match found but you want custom settings⚠️ Consider using App Store version anywayβ€”you can customize settings after

πŸ’‘ Why does this matter?

App Store apps include extra notification and badge support that Wavebox specifically builds for each service. If you boost Slack as a custom weblink instead of using the App Store version, notifications may not work reliablyβ€”even with sleep disabled.

Customizing Your Boosted App

After boosting, you can customize your app:

  1. Right-click on the app icon
  2. Select "App Settings"
  3. Adjust settings like:
    • App name and icon
    • Home URL
    • Sleep and auto-wake settings
    • Notification sounds
    • Space assignment
