You've carefully set up Wavebox to work just the way you want, so it’s only natural to worry about something going wrong. The good news is, Wavebox offers tools to keep your setup safe, so you’ll never lose sleep over your Profiles again. Here’s a guide to Wavebox’s backup and restore options.

⚠️ Important

Each Wavebox profile must be backed up separately. Make sure to have a backup for each individual profile you use.

Backup Solutions in Wavebox

📸 1. Snapshots

Snapshots make a periodic backup of a Profile to the cloud. You can restore a Profile from a Snapshot at any time to recover groups, apps, tabs, bookmarks, settings etc. You can also use Snapshots to kick-start a setup when you're installing Wavebox on another computer. Snapshots are automatically created every 24 hours and are stored securely in your cloud account.

How it works: Snapshots are automatically enabled for everyone.
Manually Create a Snapshot: You can do this at anytime by going to:
Settings > Data & Sync > Snapshots > [Create Snapshot]
How to restore:
Use a Snapshot to restore a previous setup:
Settings > Data & Sync > Snapshots > [Restore Snapshot]
Benefit: Ensures you always have a recent backup if you need to go back or start using Wavebox on another computer.

👍 Tip! You can use Snapshots to restore any Profile on any computer that is signed-in with the same Wavebox credentials.

☁️ 2. Profile Sync (For Multiple Devices)

Profile Sync provides real-time, live backups, keeping your Wavebox setup in sync across all your computers.

How it works: Profile Sync must be setup manually for each Profile.
How to Enable: Setup a new sync manually by going to:
Settings > Data & Sync > Profile Sync > [Setup]
Tip: Profile Sync instantly mirrors all changes, so you always have the latest setup on every device connected to it.

Snapshots Vs Profile Sync

Which do you choose?

Snapshots, which are similar to macOS's Time Machine, let you restore a profile to a one-time setup. They're all you need to safely backup your Profiles for peace of mind. You can use a Snapshot from one machine on another machine and they are NOT synced.
Profile Sync on the other hand can only be setup for 2+ computers, which are both kept in sync in real-time. Example: If something goes wrong on one, it will go wrong on the other and you need Snapshots to restore the Profile.

💾 3. Import & Export

You can also protect your data locally by saving it on your hard drive.

Manual Export to Disk:
For maximum safety, occasionally manually export your profiles to disk:
Settings > Data & Sync > Import & Export > [Export Config File]
Manual Import from Disk:
The saved file can then be used later to restore a Profile:
Settings > Data & Sync > Import & Export > [Import Config File]

What to Do if you Need to Restore?

If something has gone awry with your setup, you can restore it using the last saved Snapshot.

How to Restore a Profile

Snapshot:
1. Settings > Data & Sync > Snapshots > [Restore Snapshot]
2. In the All Snapshots window, find the Snapshot you want.
3. Click the 🕣 Timer icon for that Snapshot.
4. Check the restore prompt then click [Restore Snapshot]
5. Wavebox will restart, opening the restored Profile.
Local Backup (Import):
1. Find the saved Profile Config file on your computer.
2. Go to Settings > Data & Sync > Import & Export.
3. Click [Import Config File] and select the file and confirm.
4. Wavebox will restart, opening the restored Profile.

Tips for Backups

Consider contacting support if you are unsure of the restore process.
If a Profile Sync goes wrong on any computer, use a Snapshot to restore one of the computer first, then setup a new Profile Sync and join it from your other computers.
Consider doing a manual Snapshot before making any major changes to your Wavebox setup. This includes adding extensions.
Consider using a Test Profile when importing an config file. Click the Profile (User) icon top-right > Click 'Add'. In the next window give the Profile a name e.g. "Test" and check the box to use your current subscription. A blank Profile will launch ready for you to use. Once everything is setup correctly, you can delete any Profiles you don't need.
