General Troubleshooting Check List

General Troubleshooting Check List

When you encounter an issue and you're trying to determine whether you can fix it yourself or need to report a bug, follow the steps below. Remember that in many cases it's important to reload the web page and restart Wavebox for any changes to take effect.

Reload the Page

  • Click on the reload icon in the toolbar top-left. It's next to the address bar navigation buttons.
  • If that doesn't make a difference, you can try a hard reload. Hold the SHIFT key down and then click on the reload icon.

Restart Wavebox & Device

  • Sometimes the simplest things help, so exit/quit Wavebox, and hopefully on restart the issue will be gone.
  • If you've kept your computer on for a long time, restarting the device may help as well.

Make Sure Wavebox is Up to Date

If you're using an older version of Wavebox, there's a chance that the bug has already been fixed and you won't be having the issue in the latest version. So make sure to update Wavebox regularly.

To check for updates:

  1. Go to Settings > General Tab > About
  2. Click [Check for Update Now]
  3. Restart your computer after updating
  4. Launch Wavebox and see if the issue persists.

Test in a New Profile

Sometimes an extension or a specific setting can cause the issue. To check if that's the case, test the website or feature in a new profile that has no apps or extensions installed. To create a new Profile:

  1. Click the User Profile icon top-right (next to the ☰Wavebox Menu)
  2. In the pop-up menu, click Add
  3. In the Profile Manager window, give the profile a name e.g. Test
  4. Click 'Use Current Subscription' to open a new blank profile
  5. A new blank Profile will appear.

Try to reproduce the issue in the new Profile and report your findings to Wavebox support.

Test in Another Browser

Since Wavebox is based on Chromium, we sometimes inherit bugs from upstream. If that's the case, you'll likely be able to reproduce the bug in other Chromium-based browsers like Chrome or Edge. In that case, please report the bug to Wavebox support.

Disable Extensions

Extensions are a common cause of issues. That's one of the reasons Wavebox has so many built-in features—so your browsing experience won't be hindered by extension compatibility problems.

To disable extensions:

  1. Click the extensions icon (puzzle piece) in the toolbar.
  2. Select Manage Extensions from the menu.
  3. Disable all extensions by clicking the OFF toggle on each.
    • If you have a lot of extensions, click the Developer Mode toggle in the top right, then click the [Disable All] button.
  4. ⚠️ Restart Wavebox completely for changes to take effect.
  5. See if the issue is resolved.

If the issue doesn't occur with disabled extensions, start enabling them one by one and test in between each re-enabled extension to identify the culprit and report the bug to Wavebox support.

Disconnect from VPN

If you're using a VPN service, disconnect or pause the connection and reload the web page to see if the issue still persists.

Disable Hardware Acceleration

If the issue is related to Wavebox UI appearance and responsiveness, try disabling Hardware Acceleration:

  1. Go to Settings > Advanced > System.
  2. Toggle off Use hardware acceleration when available.
  3. Restart Wavebox before testing the issue again.

Check Your Security Software

Make sure your antivirus product is up to date and not blocking Wavebox. If your antivirus product warns you about dangers in Wavebox, it's most likely a false positive. In that case, review your antivirus product settings as they might be too sensitive.

Check Apps & Tabs for High Resource Usage

Some apps or tabs may be using too many system resources.

To check resource usage:

  1. Open the Navigator: Go to Wavebox Menu > Navigator > List Navigator.
  2. Sort the list first by Memory Usage, and then by CPU Usage.
  3. Look for any tabs or apps using excessive memory or CPU.
  4. Take action:
    • Click the 🌙 moon icon to sleep the tab.
    • Click the ❌ icon to close it (recommended for best performance).

You can also use the Task Manager:

  • Go to Wavebox Menu > More Tools > Task Manager to see detailed resource usage.

Report to Wavebox support:

  • If there's no obvious reason for the slowdown, please take a screenshot of the Wavebox Task Manager and send it to the Support team. When taking the screenshot, make sure that the Task Manager is expanded fully so that all columns are visible.

Delete Browsing Data

Websites get updated all the time, but information about the old version of the site is still stored in cache files and cookies. This may cause discrepancies in the displayed website and occasionally even break functionality.

In addition, storing old browsing data for a long time will use up your device's memory space, so deleting it every now and then can have a positive effect on the browser's speed as well.

To delete Cache and Cookies:

  • Go to Wavebox Menu > More Tools > Clear Browsing Data.

Delete all site data per website:

  1. Open the website.
  2. Click on the Site Info button (lock icon) on the Address Bar and select Site Settings from the menu.
  3. In the Usage section, click on Clear Data.
  4. Confirm by clicking Clear in the dialog.
  5. Reload the web page.
